Few moments in life carry the weight of both an ending and a beginning so profoundly as a graduation. This past Friday, as the latest cohort of ICA graduates took their final steps across the stage and their first steps into the industry as world-class trained culinary professionals, the room was filled with a palpable sense of pride, achievement and anticipation for what lies ahead.
For the past two to three years, these graduates have honed their craft, tested their limits, and risen to the challenges that a world-class culinary education demands, culminating in this singular moment. And yet, an ICA diploma is not merely a certificate of completion; it is a declaration of readiness, a promise of potential and a symbol of the countless sacrifices made along the way.
For the students’ families and supporters, the ceremony was an emotional milestone, one that brought the journey that led to this day into sharp focus. It is the reward for the faith they placed in the ICA to take their children from chef school applicants to fully fledged, internationally qualified, ICA-trained professional chefs. To witness these graduates receive their hard-earned black chef’s buttons is a testament to resilience, passion and an unbreakable belief in what is possible.
Celebrated ICA alumnus and SARIE Food Editor, Herman Lensing, delivered a powerful commencement speech as the guest speaker, inspiring graduates as they step into their culinary futures.
Sharing his list of 10 principles to become a successful human, Herman encouraged the newly graduated group to: “Ask yourself every day what makes you come alive and then go do that because what the world needs is people who have come alive. From time to time you may stumble, or fall – you will, for sure, count on this, no doubt. You will have questions and you will have doubts about your path. But I know this: If you’re willing to listen to and be guided by that still, small voice that is the GPS within yourself, to find out what makes you come alive, you will be more than okay.”
For current students, watching their peers graduate is both a beacon of inspiration and a reminder that excellence is forged through perseverance. It is easy to become lost in the weight of the present — the demanding training, the expectations, the countless hours perfecting the details. But this ceremony stands as proof that dedication leads to transformation and that every lesson, challenge and sacrifice brings them closer to their own defining moment.
For the graduates themselves, this ceremony is the beginning of a new chapter. The industry they have stepped into will demand more of them than they have ever given before. All of our graduates have already either been employed on a full-time basis, or they are the recipients of a queue of offers, both locally and internationally, which they are considering. ICA graduates are industry-ready and sought-after. If their time on campus has taught them anything, it is that greatness is not bestowed — it is earned. They will carry with them the lessons, discipline and artistry that have been instilled in them, in those who have walked through the ICA’s doors before them, as well as those who will follow in the years to come.
Their journey does not end with a diploma; it begins with what they choose to do with it.
Congratulations to the ICA Class of 2024! The future of the culinary world is in your hands.
