The hugely popular Afrikaans cooking competition reality show is drawing to a close this Thursday on kykNET (DStv Channel 147) at 20:00.
In this year’s season, no less than five ICA graduates (San-Marie Kotzé, Shanel Gildenhuys, Danie du Toit, Anmar Odendaal en Pasch du Plooy) entered as part of the 10 “kinkelkokke” (twist chefs – those participants with a formal background in cheffing). The “Kinkelkokke” had a vastly different challenge to the other 20 participants, being “onthoukokke” (memory chefs), having to use their chef’s qualifications, professional kitchen experience and technical know-how to come up with new dishes and adapting familiar recipes with fresh flair and tasty twists.
Of the 5 ICA entries, two made it to the finals! On Thursday, Anmar and Pasch will compete for the title of Kokkedoor 2019. Anmar graduated from the ICA in 2004 and honed her culinary skills abroad for many years before returning to the Cape Winelands a couple of years ago. Pasch graduated in 2007 and tied the knot with fellow ICA alumni, Santjie du Toit. Past chef-owner of a highly successful Franschhoek restaurant, Pasch certainly also has extensive culinary experience under his belt. Now, these two ICA alumni will cook head to head and one of them will walk away with the coveted Kokkedoor title! But – no matter who takes the crown – the ICA stands firmly behind both contestants, rooting for professional chef training excellence all the way!
