MENTORSHIP MATTERS 6: MORE THAN AN INDUSTRY PARTNER

Every ICA industry partner and chef mentor provides something valuable.

They open the doors of a professional kitchen and allow a student to experience the realities of the industry they are preparing to enter. But the relationship between the ICA and its industry partners can mean much more than providing a placement position.

Becoming part of the education

When a student enters an industry kitchen, the people around them become part of their education. Beyond the technical skills and expertise students gain, their training is marked by the chef who takes the time to explain, the colleague who demonstrates, the mentor who corrects, the team member who encourages and the person who challenges the student to do better.

Together, these people contribute to an education that extends beyond the ICA campus. They become part of the student’s professional development and, often, part of their personal growth.

Every placement can change something

A successful industry placement can reveal a strength a student did not know they possessed. It can also identify an area that needs development. Or, it can challenge an assumption, build confidence, teach humility and confirm a career path. It can even open a student’s eyes to possibilities they had never considered.

Sometimes, the impact of a placement is immediately obvious. Sometimes, it only becomes apparent years later when reflecting back on their individual journey. A student may look back on a particular chef, kitchen or experience and realise that it changed the way they approached their career.

A shared responsibility

Training a chef does not happen in isolation. It takes knowledge, discipline and practice. But it also takes people willing to share what they have learned.

The ICA provides the academic foundation. The culinary industry provides an environment in which students can experience that knowledge in practice. Mentors help students navigate the gap between knowing something and being able to apply it consistently in a professional environment.

It is a shared responsibility. And it is one that carries significance far beyond the duration of a student’s placement.

The next generation

Every student who enters an industry kitchen is a future member of our profession.

Today’s student will eventually become tomorrow’s colleague, tomorrow’s head chef, a business owner, an employer or even a mentor in their own right.

The influence of today’s industry professionals may therefore travel much further than they realise, and the standards they model, the advice they give, the corrections they make and the time they invest are eventually passed on to the next generation.

That is the quiet power of mentorship.

More than a placement

The ICA remains deeply grateful to the chefs, kitchen teams and industry partners who open their doors to our students.

You do more than provide a place for a student to complete an industry placement.

You become part of their education.

You help them understand what professional life looks like. You challenge them to grow. You allow them to discover what they are capable of and, perhaps without ever knowing it, you help shape the kind of professional they will one day become.

To every mentor who takes the time to explain, correct, challenge, encourage and guide:

You are not simply supervising a student. You are helping to shape the future of our industry.

The influence of that investment may travel much further than you will ever know.

We salute you.
